Postcard from North Carolina

“If country life be healthful to the body, it is no less so to the mind” — Giovanni Ruffini

In Charlotte, history exists on every block. From charming colonial-style homes to eerie old plantations. A drive out to the hilly countryside and history continues. Here in Winston-Salem, a town built by traditional Movarian settlers and on tobacco and textile trade has managed to create its own unique identity. Drive further out, and Appalachia culture, Southern hospitality, and low country cuisine are to be found — all depending on the direction.

Here, Sangria and coffee is cheap. The weather is slightly cooler, life is slightly simpler. The terrain is as diverse and rich as its culture. Trees appear as tall as the Californian redwoods, and as thick as the Louisiana swamp. Sitting between the Great Smoky Mountains to the West, and the Atlantic Coast to the East, North Carolina has somehow managed to cramp everything the country offers into a sample platter within the state. It’s spectacular.

All images were made with an Xpro2 and a 23mm 1.4 lens, with a home-cooked in-camera jpeg recipe. Simple crop and a-curves adjustment was applied in post.
